Urbana Sweetcorn Festival

Every year, the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign sponsors the One Community Together stage and a variety of hands-on youth activities during the Urbana Sweetcorn Festival. The One Community Together stage has hosted over 50 musical and dance performances from local groups in a variety of genres, including jazz, bluegrass, African drums, jug bands, Colombian dancing, rock and roll, and blues. In 2015, The Psychedelic Furs performed, as well as local bands such as Prairie Dogs and Cody & the Gateway Drugs.

Another important component of the One Community Together programming includes hands-on youth activities. Youth from Champaign, Urbana and the surrounding communities have had access to an instrument petting zoo, didjerido building, paper-making and crafting spinning drums. The Champaign Prosperity Gardens has partnered with One Community Together and the Urbana Sweetcorn Festival by creating games such as the fruit and veggie twister game. They have led other activities, including digging for worms, creating veggie stamps and leading an effort of seed collection for Musalila, a community in Zambia.

The One Community Together programming showcases the diverse range of cultures that call our community home. This area provides an easily accessible place for all ages of the broader community to experience, learn about, and enjoy the sights and sounds from around the world.
