On April 11, 2015, more than 1,500 volunteers gathered to package meals for families in need in the local community and in two northern Illinois towns that were ravaged by tornadoes earlier in the month. Volunteers packaged over 160,000 meals, which approximately 148,000 going to Eastern Illinois Foodbank, which serves several central Illinois counties (148,000 is 1,000 meals for every year of public engagement between the University and the State of Illinois). 12,000 meals were sent to a foodbank in northern Illinois serving families displaced by the recent severe weather. In the afternoon, volunteers repackaged 56,000 servings of oatmeal for the Eastern Illinois Foodbank so that it could be distributed to foodbank clients.

This was the third Community & Campus Day of Service, which has grown each year. The meal packaging is just one of many events that take place during National Volunteer Week each spring. This event is unique because community members come together with faculty, staff, and students to give their time and talent to improve the lives of other members of our local community.
